John Q. Winfield Letters, 1861-1862

John Q. Winfield (1822-1892) was a physician of Broadway, Va. During the Civil War he served as captain of the 7th Virginia Infantry Regiment, C.S.A., under his friend, General Turner Ashby. The collection consists of letters from Winfield to his wife Sallie at Cootes Store, Rockingham County, Va., and Woodstock, Va., while he was serving in the Shenandoah Valley and western Virginia (especially near Romney,now in West Virginia) early in the Civil War. The letters discuss, sometimes in detail, military movements and personnel, and encounters with Union forces.
